The Real Story Behind Netflix's A Toxic Love Story: The Michelle Hadley Case
In 2016, Michelle Hadley was accused of terrorizing her ex-fiancé’s pregnant wife and sending strangers to her home to carry out a violent sexual attack. The evidence appeared so overwhelming that Michelle spent 88 days in jail and faced the possibility of life in prison.
But the case was never simply about a jealous ex and the woman who replaced her. It would take years, and a federal investigation, to uncover the role of the man connecting them.
With Netflix’s new documentary A Toxic Love Story dropping this week, the world is about to discover one of the most diabolical framing schemes in modern true crime history. We first covered this case in 2019, when it appeared the story had already reached its conclusion. But since then, everything has changed.

Here is the real story of Michelle Hadley, Ian Diaz, and Angela Diaz.
The Fairy Tale Gone Wrong
Michelle Hadley was an ambitious graduate student who described herself as "sickeningly wholesome." In August 2013, she met Ian Diaz on a dating app. Ian was a deputy United States marshal, a career that made him seem responsible, protective, and dependable.
Their connection was intense. By their second date, Ian told Michelle he loved her. By December 2014, he proposed during a Christmas trip to New York City. To build their future, they purchased a $468,000 condo in downtown Anaheim, California. Michelle emptied her savings to provide the $14,000 down payment.
But once they moved in, the relationship darkened. According to Michelle, Ian became controlling and emotionally abusive. He monitored her movements, installed security cameras in the condo, and relentlessly pressured her to fulfill a sexual fantasy involving another man, a request that deeply traumatized her.
Fearing his anger and his law enforcement connections, Michelle eventually fled the condo. She sent two emotionally charged, religiously themed emails during the breakup, messages that would later be weaponized against her. The two hired attorneys to resolve the condo dispute, and Michelle attempted to move on with her life.
The "Craigslist Rape Fantasy" Plot
In January 2016, Ian met Angela through an online dating site. Within a month, they were married. Angela moved into the Anaheim condo, and soon announced she was pregnant with twins.
Then, the harassment began.
Angela began receiving terrifying emails from an account named "LilithOfTruth." The sender used religious language, strikingly similar to Michelle's breakup emails, and threatened to kidnap and kill Angela's unborn children. The sender claimed to be watching Angela and accused her of stealing her home and her future.
The threats soon escalated beyond the internet. The person calling herself Lilith began responding to Craigslist ads, directing men to the condo for what they were told was a consensual "rape fantasy." On multiple occasions, men arrived at the property, where Ian, armed and wearing his U.S. Marshals badge, was waiting.
On June 24, 2016, Angela called 911, claiming a masked man had attacked her outside the condo, leaving her with visible injuries.
For the Anaheim Police Department, the evidence seemed conclusive. They arrested Michelle Hadley.
88 Days in Jail for Nothing
Michelle was charged with stalking, making criminal threats, violating a protective order, and multiple counts of attempted rape. Her bail was set at $1 million. She spent 88 terrifying days in jail, facing the very real possibility of life in prison.
But her parents never stopped fighting for her. They hired a defense attorney who began digging into the digital footprint of the threats.
The electronic investigation blew the case wide open. The threatening emails and Craigslist posts hadn't been sent by Michelle. They were traced back to devices connected to the Anaheim condo, Angela's phone, and Angela's father's home in Arizona. Security footage also proved the June 24 attack on Angela never happened.
Then, Ian made a shocking discovery: Angela wasn't pregnant. She had faked the sonograms and drawn lines on pregnancy tests. Investigators soon learned this wasn't Angela's first massive deception, she had previously faked a stage-four cancer diagnosis and a legal career to manipulate a former boyfriend.
On January 9, 2017, the Orange County District Attorney fully exonerated Michelle Hadley. Angela Diaz was arrested, pleaded guilty to kidnapping, false imprisonment, and perjury, and was sentenced to five years in state prison.
The Final Twist: The Man in the Middle
For years, the media narrative framed the case as a battle between two women: first, the "crazy, jealous ex," and later, the "diabolical new wife." Ian Diaz was portrayed as the unfortunate man caught in the middle.
But Michelle never believed Ian was innocent. He had the financial motive, the knowledge of Craigslist, and the law enforcement expertise to pull it off.
The Department of Justice agreed. They launched a federal investigation into their own deputy marshal. Digital forensics recovered fragments of the threatening "Lilith" messages on Ian's government-issued laptop. Investigators found that Ian had personally communicated with the Craigslist men, altered evidence before giving it to local police, and used his federal badge to pressure Anaheim officers into arresting Michelle.
In May 2021, Ian Diaz was federally indicted. In March 2023, a federal jury convicted him on all counts, including conspiracy to commit cyberstalking and perjury. He was sentenced to over 10 years in federal prison.
On the exact day Ian was convicted, Michelle gave birth to a daughter.
