The Nightmare in North Dakota: The Murder of Angila Wilder

The Murder of Angila Wilder

In November of 2015, Angila Wilder was finally building the life she had always wanted. The 30-year-old mother of three was living in Minot, North Dakota, engaged to her high school sweetheart, Christopher Jackson, and was just days away from completing her nursing exams at Minot State University. Angila was two months pregnant and working tirelessly to provide a stable home for her family.

But on the morning of Friday the 13th, Christopher returned home from his overnight shift at Walmart to find the back door of their house kicked in. Inside the bedroom, he discovered Angila's body. She had been stabbed 44 times in a frenzied and violent attack. Heartbreakingly, the couple's two-year-old son had slept through the entire ordeal in the bedroom right next door.

A Toxic Custody Battle

Investigators quickly ruled out a random burglary. The house was undisturbed, expensive electronics were left in plain sight, and it was clear the killer had come specifically for Angila. Detectives immediately turned their attention to Angila's ex-husband, Ritchie Wilder Jr. The former couple shared two children and had been locked in a bitter, highly documented custody battle for years.

Ritchie had a history of domestic violence, which had previously led to his discharge from the Air Force. While Angila was trying to move on with her life, Ritchie and his new wife, Cynthia, who worked as a kindergarten teacher, had become increasingly obsessed with her. Angila had even told friends that Cynthia was stalking her and parking outside her workplace.

Interrogations and a Failed Escape

When police brought Ritchie in for questioning, his demeanor was remarkably cold. He claimed his medical training as a nursing assistant taught him to maintain a "poker face" when dealing with death. Cynthia's interrogation was even more disturbing. She fiercely defended Ritchie, provided him with an alibi, and spoke about Angila with shocking hatred and profanity.

Despite their lies, forensic evidence caught up with Ritchie. His DNA was found under Angila's fingernails, and a single drop of Angila's blood was discovered in the passenger door of Cynthia's Honda Pilot. Ritchie was arrested and eventually convicted of murder in December 2016, but not before he attempted to break out of jail using a makeshift spear and a rope made of bedsheets.

The Undercover Sting

While Ritchie was sentenced to life in prison, Cynthia remained free. But her involvement in the crime was far deeper than anyone initially realized. Months after Ritchie's conviction, Cynthia reconnected with an old friend, a bartender named Matt Walters. As she began letting details slip about the murder, Matt contacted investigators and agreed to wear a wire.

During a recorded conversation in Matt's car, Cynthia confessed everything. She admitted that she and Ritchie had spent two years planning the murder. She detailed how she stalked Angila to learn her schedule, helped Ritchie clean the blood out of the car, and disposed of the evidence. Most chillingly, she expressed no remorse, stating she was proud of Ritchie and only angry that he had been sloppy enough to get caught. Cynthia was arrested and ultimately sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, ensuring that both she and Ritchie will spend the rest of their lives behind bars.
