The Murder of Charlie Starner: A Hocking Hills Birthday Party Turned Deadly

A Party in the Woods

On April 22, 2023, friends and family gathered at a rental cabin in Sugar Grove, Ohio, to celebrate a birthday in the heart of Hocking Hills. The night was supposed to be about bonfires and good times, but the arrival of one volatile guest, 20-year-old Isaac Pence, set the stage for a tragedy. For 22-year-old Charlie Starner, a devoted father and fiancé, it was meant to be a casual night out. He had no idea it would be his last.

A Volatile Guest

Fueled by a 12-pack of beer and shots of Hennessy, Isaac Pence’s behavior grew increasingly erratic. Tensions with his fiancée, Sabra Flagg, and her brother, whose birthday it was, simmered throughout the evening. Witnesses described a man who was explosive, jealous, and confrontational. The party’s atmosphere shifted from celebratory to tense after Isaac shoved a female guest, prompting others to intervene and try to force him to leave.

The Fatal Confrontation

The conflict spilled outside to Isaac’s car. While several partygoers, including Charlie Starner, attempted to de-escalate the situation by getting Isaac to drive away, the confrontation turned deadly. Isaac grabbed a rainbow-bladed knife and, in a chaotic scene captured on a cell phone video, stabbed Charlie multiple times. While Isaac would later claim he was jumped by a mob and acted in self-defense, the evidence—and the video—told a different story.

The Aftermath and a Question of Justice

Charlie Starner was airlifted to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries. Isaac Pence fled the scene, disposed of the murder weapon, and was later arrested. His trial hinged on a single question: was this a clear case of murder, or did he act in a blind panic, fearing for his life? We break down the investigation, the trial, and the verdict that would determine one young man’s fate and leave another’s family searching for justice.
