The Murder of Harold Allen: The Root Beer Float Poisoning
In December 2022, Harold Allen died at his home in Freetown, Indiana, after months of serious and confusing health problems. Harold was 52 years old, a controls engineer, musician, Harley rider, and a man his family knew as dependable and deeply devoted to the people he loved. His death was attributed to multiple cardiac conditions, including pericarditis, and no one initially suspected foul play.
A Death That Seemed Natural
Before his death, Harold had made repeated trips to the emergency room with severe gastrointestinal symptoms. Doctors believed he had diverticulitis, and his family knew he was also living with diabetes. When he died just days before Christmas, the medical explanation seemed to fit the health problems everyone had watched him endure.
Nearly nine months later, a burglary at the home of Harold’s widow, Marsha Allen, changed the direction of the case. Security footage showed two men entering the home and opening a safe. As detectives investigated the break in, one of the men gave them information that caused them to revisit Harold’s death.
The Burglary That Changed Everything
Investigators recovered thousands of messages between Marsha and her daughter, Ashley Jones. Authorities said the messages described multiple attempts to poison Harold, including food and drinks prepared with toxic substances. Detectives later focused on ethylene glycol, a chemical used in antifreeze, which they said was mixed into a root beer float before Harold’s death.
Ashley later admitted that she had purchased ethylene glycol and identified Marsha as the person who mixed it into the drink. In August 2025, Ashley pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit murder and attempted murder. She was sentenced to 50 years in prison the following month. Marsha died before she was charged in Harold’s death.
Remembering Harold Allen
Harold’s family called him Peanut, a nickname he carried from infancy. He taught himself to play the guitar, mandolin, and harmonica, loved bluegrass music, fishing, hunting, and travel, and embraced becoming a grandfather after marrying Marsha.
