Mackenzie Shirilla: The Intentional Crash That Killed Dominic Russo and Davion Flanagan

The Fatal Crash on Progress Drive

It was early morning on July 31, 2022, when a horrific scene was discovered at the end of Progress Drive Business Park in Strongsville, Ohio. A black Toyota Camry had slammed into a brick building at an incredible speed. Inside the mangled vehicle were three young people: 20-year-old Dominic Russo, 19-year-old Davion Flanagan, and 17-year-old Mackenzie Shirilla. Tragically, both Dominic and Davion were pronounced dead at the scene. Mackenzie, who was behind the wheel, was miraculously still alive and was life-flighted to a local hospital in critical condition.

Initially, authorities thought the crash was a terrible accident, possibly the result of substance use. However, as investigators began to peel back the layers of the events leading up to that morning, a very different picture emerged. Surveillance footage showed the Camry driving normally before making a turn onto Progress Drive and rapidly accelerating to 92 miles per hour down the three-quarter-mile road. The vehicle's data recorder revealed that the gas pedal was pushed down at 100 percent capacity with no application to the brake, and the steering wheel was jerked hard right just before impact.

A Toxic Relationship and Warning Signs

The investigation soon uncovered the tumultuous relationship between Mackenzie and her boyfriend, Dominic. While Mackenzie portrayed a grieving girlfriend on social media, those close to the couple described a very rocky dynamic. Evidence of Mackenzie's reckless driving behavior surfaced, along with accounts of her making threats against Dominic. Just weeks before the fatal crash, an altercation occurred where Mackenzie threatened to crash her car with Dominic inside. Videos recorded by Dominic also showed Mackenzie degrading him and threatening his property.

The trial, which began in August 2023, laid out the prosecution's case that Mackenzie intentionally drove her car into the building to end her relationship with Dominic, taking Davion's life in the process. Despite the defense's arguments that the crash could have been an accident or a result of a medical condition called POTS, the judge found Mackenzie guilty on all counts, including murder. She was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 15 years.

Recent Developments and Netflix's "The Crash"

Since the trial, there have been several new developments in the Mackenzie Shirilla case. All of her appeals have been denied, and the Ohio Supreme Court declined to hear her case in early 2026. Additionally, body cam footage from her arrest and jailhouse calls have been released to the public, shedding more light on her demeanor following the crash.

This case is gaining renewed attention with the upcoming release of the documentary "The Crash," premiering on Netflix on May 15th. Produced by the team behind "The Tinder Swindler," the documentary promises to reveal even more shocking details and twists that were not widely known. We highly recommend watching it to fully understand the complexities of this tragic story.
