Devon Guzman: A Fatal Love Square in Easton, Pennsylvania

A Complicated Web of Relationships

In June 2000, the town of Easton, Pennsylvania, became the center of a tragic and deeply convoluted murder investigation. Nineteen-year-old Devon Guzman was a sweet and energetic young woman who found herself at the heart of a volatile "love square." Devon was romantically involved with two women: her fiancée, Keary Renner, and her high school friend, Michelle Hetzel. To complicate matters further, both Keary and Michelle were married to men. While Keary's husband was away at boot camp, Michelle lived with her husband, Brandon Bloss, who grew increasingly frustrated by his wife's ongoing relationship with Devon.

The dynamics between the four individuals were fraught with jealousy, secret rendezvous, and frequent, sometimes violent, arguments. The situation reached a boiling point after Devon and Michelle took a secret romantic trip to Puerto Rico, entirely funded by Michelle, without telling Keary or Brandon. Upon their return, the fragile peace shattered, leading to a series of intense altercations that would ultimately end in tragedy.

A Staged Crime Scene and a Brutal Discovery

On the morning of June 15, 2000, after a chaotic night of fighting and frantic phone calls, Michelle and Keary discovered Devon's lifeless body in the back seat of her car, parked at the former Canal Museum. While there was an obvious attempt to stage the scene as a suicide—complete with a syringe and a kitchen knife placed in Devon's hand—the lack of blood in the car and the severity of the deep laceration to her neck immediately signaled to investigators that Devon had been murdered elsewhere and moved.

As police interviewed Keary, Michelle, and Brandon, their conflicting stories and the physical evidence left behind began to paint a chilling picture. While Keary was an initial suspect due to her history of violent fights with Devon, she lacked the means to transport the body. The investigation soon zeroed in on Michelle and Brandon, especially after a search of their home revealed blood-stained clothing, a matching syringe cap in the wash, and a crucial piece of forensic evidence: discarded bandages covering a human bite mark.

Forensic Evidence Leads to Justice

The bite mark found on Brandon Bloss's arm proved to be the smoking gun. Forensic odontologists confirmed that the bite pattern was highly consistent with Devon Guzman's dental impressions, indicating she had fought back against her attackers. In August 2000, both Michelle and Brandon were arrested and charged with first-degree murder. During their joint trial, the couple turned on each other, with Michelle claiming Brandon acted alone out of jealousy, and Brandon's defense arguing that Michelle was the true killer.

Despite their attempts to shift the blame, the jury found both Michelle Hetzel and Brandon Bloss guilty of first-degree murder, and they were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The tragic death of Devon Guzman remains a haunting reminder of how a toxic web of jealousy and betrayal can escalate into senseless violence.
