The Murder of Rory McGuire: How a 4th of July Prank Turned Deadly

A Night of Mischief Ends in Tragedy

What began as a night of harmless fun for six young men quickly spiraled into a nightmare. After failing to find a party near Antelope Lake, California, the group decided to pull a prank on the resident of a remote cabin. They stole a solar light and a strange, intimidating sign, laughing it off as a joke. They had no idea the cabin's owner was watching, and he wasn't laughing.

The "Republic of Chad"

Chad Wallen-Reed, a man who claimed to be an elite Army Ranger, saw the prank as a threat to his family. From his isolated cabin, which he called "The ROC" (Republic of Chad), he decided to take matters into his own hands. Fueled by paranoia from previous break-ins, he grabbed his AR-15 and began a high-speed chase down a deserted road, determined to "neutralize the threat."

A Deadly Confrontation

Despite the young men's attempts to surrender—tossing the stolen light out the window and waving a white t-shirt—Chad continued his pursuit. The chase ended when he cornered their vehicle and unleashed a barrage of bullets, killing the driver, Rory McGuire, and severely injuring others. Chad claimed the men shot at him first, but no weapon was ever found in their car.
