Francine Hughes: The Burning Bed
A Mother Who Fought Back
Francine Hughes was a mother of four living in Dansville, Michigan who endured thirteen years of relentless physical and emotional abuse at the hands of her husband Mickey Hughes. In 1977 after yet another brutal assault, Francine reached her breaking point. While Mickey slept, she poured gasoline around his bed and set the house on fire.
The Trial That Shocked America
The resulting trial became a national sensation. For the first time, the realities of battered woman syndrome were brought into the courtroom, forcing America to confront how the legal system repeatedly failed victims of domestic violence. Francine was ultimately found not guilty by reason of temporary insanity in a verdict that stunned the country.
The Case That Changed Everything
The case eventually inspired the bestselling book and hit TV movie The Burning Bed starring Farrah Fawcett. Francine's story helped reshape domestic violence law across the United States and brought battered woman syndrome into the national conversation for the first time. Join us as we dive into the tragic and pivotal true crime story of Francine Hughes and the trial that changed America forever.
