The series is not simply a summary of a familiar case. ABC News Studios says it includes exclusive audio and people close to the investigation and Adelson family who have not previously spoken publicly.

Who was Dan Markel?
Dan Markel was a law professor at Florida State University and the father of two sons. He had been involved in a difficult divorce and custody dispute with his former wife, Wendi Adelson. A court had denied a request to relocate the children to South Florida, where Wendi’s family lived.
On July 18, 2014, Markel was shot in the garage of his Tallahassee home. Investigators ultimately described the killing as a murder-for-hire plot tied to the custody conflict and a network of people in Tallahassee and South Florida.
The Dan Markel case: what happened?
The investigation moved slowly. Detectives worked through interviews, financial records, surveillance footage, phone evidence, and wire recordings before the case led to arrests and trials.
Five people have been convicted in connection with Markel’s murder: Sigfredo Garcia, Luis Rivera, Katherine Magbanua, Charlie Adelson, and Donna Adelson.
Garcia and Rivera were identified as the men who traveled from South Florida to Tallahassee in the period surrounding Markel’s death. Rivera later pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. Garcia was convicted of first-degree murder.
Magbanua, who had previously been in a relationship with Charlie Adelson, was convicted after a retrial. Charlie Adelson was convicted in 2023 of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and solicitation to commit murder. Donna Adelson, Markel’s former mother-in-law, was also convicted in the case.
Wendi Adelson has not been charged in connection with Markel’s murder. Prosecutors have referred to her as an unindicted co-conspirator, and she has maintained her innocence.
