The Murder of Austin Kanuch and the Mountain Bike Clue
Mary was inside the home and immediately called 911. Their young son, Pierce, was asleep in his nursery. Neither Mary nor Pierce was physically harmed. Austin's two daughters were with their mother that night. Nothing was taken from the home, and investigators believe Austin was the intended target.
The Mountain Bike Timeline
For nearly two years, Austin's family had few public details about the case. In 2025, the Harris County Sheriff's Office and Crime Stoppers of Houston released surveillance footage showing an unidentified person riding a mountain bike toward the home on Greenleaf Lake Drive shortly before the attack. About an hour later, the same rider was captured leaving the area.
The video is dark and the rider's face cannot be seen clearly. Investigators have not identified a suspect or publicly explained why Austin may have been targeted. They believe someone may recognize the person, the bicycle, or the route through the neighborhood.
A Family Still Seeking Answers
Austin was 39 years old, a devoted father of three, husband, son, friend, singer, car enthusiast, and barbecue lover. His family describes him as warm, generous, and a peacemaker who cared deeply about the people around him. In 2026, Austin's loved ones gathered for the dedication of a memorial bench and tree at Cypress Park, created through the We Remember Memorial Project.
