[00:00:00] Hey guys, and welcome to the Moms of Mysteries podcast, a True Crime podcast featuring myself, Mandy, and my dear friend Melissa. Hi, Melissa. Hi Mandy, how are you? I am doing well. How are you? I'm good. I have two more questions. Uhoh. Um, one is, hi Sarah, how are you? And the other is Hi Maya, how are you? Hello.

Hi. Hi guys. We have Maya and Sarah from the wonderful podcast doing it all. We were recently on invited to be on their show, which was so much fun. We have such a great podcast. Thank you guys so much for coming on. Do you wanna tell us a little about your podcast? Yeah, sure. Oh, you can head Maya. Yes. So we sit down and talk to successful people.

We're both moms. We talk to a lot of moms, but not just moms, about how they are, you know, managing [00:01:00] their careers and passions alongside their families and relationships. We have people from all walks of life, all family structures, careers, and it's just really cool because. As everybody knows, when you become a parent, you are like, literally, how is everybody doing this?

And so we get to ask people, cool people, people that lots of people admire the nitty gritty, nosy questions like, who does their laundry and their child gets, yeah. Spoiler alert, nobody's actually doing it all. Yeah. I read that the first time. I was like, oh wow. And then I was like, there's no way. This is like tongue in cheek.

There's no way they're We're all doing it all. No, because when she just said that they interview cool people, you know, interesting people. That's why we were surprised that we got invited on. Yeah. We assumed that you guys were busy that week and you guys, somebody canceled and we were like, yeah, let's do it.

You guys are the coolest. I am a moms and OG murder stand now. Moms and [00:02:00] mysteries. I've been listening since. 2018. So this is like, wow, my mind is blown. I wish you guys could see my face because the smiles like from ear to ear, like the Joker. Aww. Mm-hmm. But much prettier than the Joker. Thank you. Oh, thank you.

Don't do it yourself like that. Yeah. Well thank you guys so much for coming on. As Melissa was saying, we had so much fun when we came on your podcast. If any of our listeners are listening to this and they didn't realize that we were on your podcast, hopefully now you will go check it out after you listen to this episode.

Uh, we did a great interview with them, so. Please, please go listen if you haven't already. But today we're here for something a little different. Um, this is a. Thursday episode for us at Moms and Mysteries, and as you guys know, we like to do something a little different each Thursday and this week we thought it would be fun to bring on these lovely guests and share some, I feel like this is really Melissa.

Write up Melissa's alley. We're sharing some stories where. Celebrity adjacent, possibly there's some celebrity connections to crime, which [00:03:00] as I said, that's Melissa's entire thing, so I know this is like the best day of her life. This is her favorite episode we've ever recorded. To be fair, when we went on, uh, when we went on doing it all, they asked us some questions and one was about housewives and I was like, well done.

We know who we have to have on. These are our people. So thank you guys for making my dreams come true and making Mandy talk about celebrities and especially in a crimey way. There's a lot, and I learned a lot I know, doing this, so I'm excited to get started. Me too. Yeah. Okay, so I will start us off with our first story of a celebrity who has a connection to a crime.

So the actor that I'm talking about today is David Schwimmer, and chances are when you hear that name, your brain immediately goes to one place and one place only. And that is the show friends, Maya and Sarah. Did you guys watch friends much or were you like me and didn't really get into friends? My partner is friend's.

Biggest fan. Really? [00:04:00] I've seen every episode 42 times. No way. Maya, you were nodding. One of my best friends was like a huge friends fan, and so I've seen plenty of friends and it's something that if I like am home at my mom's house without like real, all the streaming that I like, like I can always. Always watch friends.

And anytime I think about friends, I think of David Schwimmer in the leather pants, in the bathroom with the lotion and the powder. Um, and it's like, it's like a core memory of mine. So yes, I love that. Love him. I love that. Yeah. I can't say that I was really a friend, uh, fan or like a super fan or anything, but of course I, you know, I did grow up.

In the period where friends was always on, I dabbled in, I dabbled in friends, I dabbled in friends on television and in real life. Um, but didn't, didn't make it very far with either one. Sure, sure. No. Uh, so anyway, who could forget? Ross Geller, obviously a very, uh. Popular icon of the time. But as it [00:05:00] turns out in real life, David Schwimmer can actually be a pretty helpful guy to have around, especially if there's a crime happening right next door.

So here's what went down. It was about 5 45 in the morning, one day in New York's East Village when a fight broke out on the first floor apartment, um, of a building that was right next to David's townhouse. So this wasn't just your run of the mill shouting match. This was an all out brawl over a stolen laptop and it involved three people.

According to the reports, one of the men had hired a sex worker who may have also been an accomplice, and while they, two of them were. Otherwise entangled, another man allegedly snuck into the apartment to steal the guy's laptop and things got really chaotic very quickly. The sex worker reportedly pepper sprayed the client and ran off, and a knife got pulled.

And during the struggle, the knife ended up being used on the man that lived there and he ended up suffering stab wounds to his face. My God. I know this is not a typical [00:06:00] Tuesday. No. Um, so this fight ended up spilling out into the hallway. Threw a glass door in the building's lobby. They went through a door and tumbled onto the street where they continued this fight.

By the time the police arrived, one of the men had fled. Another was arrested, and the stabbing victim was taken to the hospital, but the police were left trying to piece together exactly what happened, and really, with only these two conflicting accounts to go on, that's not gonna be really easy to do.

That is where our hero, David Schwimmer comes into the story. So officers notice that Schwimmer's townhouse, which is, as I said, right next to the scene, had a surveillance camera pointed toward the street, and so they just casually knocked on his door and. Probably were surprised to see David Schwimmer, um, answering it.

And he didn't hesitate to cooperate with the police. He invited them inside and said that they could review the footage right then and there on the spot. Sure enough, there it was. The fight had been caught on camera and they saw everything that happened after the [00:07:00] fight spilled outside, and that gave investigators valuable evidence to help them understand exactly what had really gone down.

Um, David Schwimmer even handed over a copy of the footage, which the police said could be used in court. In the end, the suspect who was 21-year-old Robert Rainey, was charged with assault, criminal possession of a weapon and robbery. And as one local neighbor put it, even though Schwimmer wasn't always the most popular guy on the block, after some lengthy construction work on his townhouse, apparently he did not make friends in the neighborhood that way.

Uh, this time around they were. I guess he redeemed himself. They were happy to see him stepping it up. Okay. The one where David Schwimmer saves the day. There you go. Yes. There you go. Nice job. Um, okay question. Sex worker. Sex worker, client, other person? Yes. Sex worker and sex worker client are engaged in their time back.

Mm-hmm. And another third person comes into Rob. Oh, and that's why they said that she could have been an accomplice because [00:08:00] she with him and Yeah. Told somebody we're gonna be busy and yeah. What would that title be, Sarah? The one where, I don't know what it is. The one where we wouldn't say that on our show, so there you go.

Awesome. Um, so, alright, so Maya, what do you have for us today? Ooh, I love this because again, it's a celebrity story where it reminds you how human they are. Um, so Ashton Kutcher, everybody's favorite Hollywood heartthrob from the early two thousands. Prankster extraordinaire, all around. Nice guy. But in 2001, he was.

Thrust into like a real life nightmare that no rom-com could have ever prepared him for. And it wasn't like, you know, a scandal or some, you know, Hollywood affair. It was a murder case, a brutal one that he didn't even realize he was connected to until it was too late. So, [00:09:00] on February 21st in 2001, Ashton was planning to go on a casual date with a woman that he'd recently met.

She was 22 years old. Her name was Ashley Rin. Beautiful, vibrant, well-liked girl studying fashion in la and they had been casually, casually seeing each other and he was actually planning to take her to a Grammy party that night. So this is like the height, like the rise of Ashton Kutcher. So Ashton was 23.

He was on that seventies show, dude, where's my car had just come out? Mm-hmm. Yeah, like this is before, right before Ashley, he was dating January Jones. Like Ashton was, you know the IT guy at that time. So I'm sure poor Ashley was super excited to go to the Grammy party with him and he called her around eight 30 that night to say he was on the way.

She. Said that she was just getting out of the shower like he did talk to her. She said she was doing her [00:10:00] hair. Everything was totally normal. So he ends up pulling up to her bungalow in the Hollywood Hills around 10:45 PM I like the face you made because clearly 10:45 PM like all of us make the same face.

Like you're, we're a little late. Like in theory it's like, okay, Grammy's party, I guess it's after the Grammy's book. Goodness, 10 45 at night on a, like a date? Mm-hmm. Like an early date is like, no, no, no. I've been home. I'm asleep. Yes. And there's no, yeah, don't talk to me. Seriously. So, you know, he knocks on her door, she doesn't answer.

He waits a little bit, knocks again, still nothing. The lights are on. He actually peeks through her window and sees what he thinks is red wine spilled on the carpet. Which we obviously know was not red wine, but he had no reason to think that anything was wrong. He figured she bailed on him, or for some reason had already left.

So he just left too. Which I think [00:11:00] is something that you know, you hear a lot about too, is people leaving the scene or not calling 9 1 1 and it's just like, if only the next morning Ashley's roommate came home and discovered the unimaginable. Ashley had been brutally murdered, stabbed 47 times in like a horrific attack.

The crime scene was bloody and brutal and clearly, deeply personal. It was clear that it wasn't some robbery, and initially the case went cold. You know, poor Ashton was dealing with. All this scrutiny. People were like, was he involved? There were rumors, his fingerprints were on the door. Everybody's like, why didn't you call 9 1 1 if you're saying you saw red wine?

You know? But over the next several years, a pattern emerged and a man named Michael Gar Glio became a suspect, not just in Ashley's murder, but multiple killings, and they ended up later [00:12:00] dubbing him the Hollywood Ripper. And you know, that nickname doesn't even really begin to describe how terrifying he really was.

He actually lived only a few doors down from Ashley and was charming and seemingly normal. He offered to fix her heater for free once, but. Obviously underneath the facade was a predator. He stalked all of his victims and planned their deaths meticulously So fast forward to 2019. Nearly two decades later, Ashton took the witness stand in Gargo Leo's trial.

He said it was really surreal. He recounted the night, um, how he knocked on the door. Quote wine that he saw and how he felt panicked when he found out later. What really happened, obviously as a, you know, rising superstar. And he actually said he was scared to testify because of his fingerprints being on the doorknob.

Like he genuinely thought that he was going to become a serious suspect at one point, but [00:13:00] his testimony actually helped tightly nail down the timeline of her between when she got off the phone and, you know, when he arrived. And it really helped them pinpoint, um, Gar Glio along with his DNA evidence at the scene and the fact that he had a nearly identical MO in.

Several of his other, you know, cases that he was involved in. So in 2021, Gar Glio was sentenced to death and the jury also heard about his other victims, including an attempted murder survivor named Michelle Murphy, who bravely testified. And there's other things you can hear about that. So. Ashton didn't solve the crime, but his memory and honesty really did help bring justice and you know, that's what matters.

That's such a horrible story and something we've talked about before on the podcast. 'cause it always comes up whenever you know, something like that. Like, oh, I thought I saw red wine, so I just assumed something. Completely innocent and just left, you know, went about my, my evening. But you hear that all the time and you know, [00:14:00] people do in, in, you know, hindsight, people are like, well, that seems weird that you wouldn't call 9 1 1.

But human nature is not to think the worst case scenario. Why would Ashton go over to her house and think that she had been murdered inside? You know, that's not what your brain logically is thinking. Whenever you just see a stain and it's late at night, it's dark inside. And so. I feel like those kind of, and your brain tries to protect you.

Of course. Yeah. Like you're not gonna think that, first of all, especially if you just haven't even been out with this person, you're gonna be like, well, I guess they didn't want the date. You know, they just weren't interested. But also I can imagine like being in that situation, being ash in Ashton's shoes and like later realizing you know, what actually happened and how close you were, you know, to the whole situation.

Just. I feel like that would just give me anxiety for the rest of my life. For sure. That's definitely the scariest part. Do you guys remember this at the time? Because I really don't remember it until the trial came up. Yeah. And I felt like it would've been one of those things that we. Paris Hilton would've written about or something, but I don't [00:15:00] remember it at all, which, um, I thought was kind of interesting that I probably, his team was able to keep him out of it.

But I do remember that trial. I just remember him with the mustache. That's not an important, right? It's not like the most important, but I was like, what movie is he doing? Because there's no way you just do this. That's not important at all. And I might take it out later, but um, maybe that was his way of like being serious.

Like, there you go. This is my, I did take almost like a suit. There you go. It's a mustache. You know, he was in character. Very good luck. Good job, Sarah. I like that. I was just gonna, you know, say what Mandy was saying, like that is the scariest part is how close we come to evil without even realizing it.

Yeah. You know, like proximity is you, you can literally be on the doorstep. Yeah. With, you know, and feedback. What's that weird statistic that like 36 times times in your life, like you'll cross, you'll be like crossing paths physically with a killer or someone who has killed, and that's absolutely wild to think.

[00:16:00] I think it would be wild to cross paths with a killer once or twice, but 36 times is truly horrifying. Definitely in my head, head the way mm-hmm. I survive is I say all 36 of those were justified. And so I'm like, feel fine walking around people and I'm like, it wasn't on purpose. It wasn't on purpose. You got away.

It helps. Then you don't think everyone's feels it's too scary otherwise, right? Oh my God, yes. Okay, so I'm going to share, um, a story about. Uh, actually that I was very surprised. I did not know anything about this. And this involves two celebrities. So you may know Naomi Campbell as being a supermodel who's walked countless runways, and Mia Pharaoh, who is an iconic actress and a human's rights activist.

And if you're wondering, what do these two beautiful ladies have in common? Well, it's that they were both born in London. I'm just kidding. That's not true. But Naomi was, it's actually that they both dated Woody [00:17:00] Allen again. I'm kidding. I'm kidding. That's not true either. Although Mia Pharaoh did and had a kid with him.

Um, which I don't know if you haven't seen the whole Woody Allen, uh, Mia Pharaoh. I, I think it's called Pharaoh versus Allen documentary. Mm-hmm. It's really good, but. Incredibly dark as well. So I should probably tell you what I, what they actually have in common. And that's that they both played roles in one of the most notorious war crime trials in the 21st century.

And so now both of them dating Woody Allen actually doesn't seem that weird. Right. Like that seemed like that made more sense. Right, exactly. So. We're gonna set the stage. It's September of 1997 and Nelson Mandela, who is alive and or at this time and Mandela affecting, was not taking place. He's hosting a charity dinner at his presidential residence in Pretoria, South Africa.

[00:18:00] So the event was the kind of star setted gathering you'd expect. There's world famous figures from entertainment and politics all in one place. And yes, that means supermodel. Naomi Campbell and actress Villa Pharaoh were there. But what would've brought these two women together at the same table that same night?

So a little background on Naomi. She was discovered at just 15 years old and quickly became one of the top su supermodels of the nineties. She was actually part of the famous big six supermodels. Uh, do you guys remember any of those supermodels from the nineties? Do you know anybody else? Does any any other name pop out?

Tyra, not Tyra. I was thinking Tyra too. Cindy Crawford. Cindy Crawford's one. Oh, um, think Thin. Thin. Thin. Twiggy. Well, she is Twiggy as well, but that wasn't her, wasn't there her supermodel that went a nickname? This is Kate Moss is the one I was going for. She's also Twiggy, somebody that was in the news recently.

Linda Evangelista, [00:19:00] Uhhuh, I, she's the one that has like. Okay. I could be wrong, but I think she's the one that had like some medical, uh, cosmetic procedures that like now she totally regrets and they've ruined her body and her face. Mm-hmm. Like, she's just horrified. It's awful. Mm-hmm. Christie Turlington was another one, and Claudia Schiffer.

And Naomi Campbell. So those are the big six. In combination with being one of the big six. She graced, uh, Naomi Graced over 500 magazine covers. She worked with designers like Versace and Chanel. She even branched out into acting and business Also. She was like the first, I'm wearing masks and gloves.

Person I saw pre COVID, oh my God, she does not like germs. And um, and good for her. I mean, do you remember her suit? Like during COVID, she had like a hazmat suit that she wore? No, when she was traveling during COVID, it was the most fabulous thing I've ever seen. Oh my gosh. So when COVID was happening, or right before Mandy and I were supposed to do a live show in Chicago and I was so [00:20:00] excited, but I don't know, I had started getting really paranoid about germs and this is before we knew anything was going on.

And so I had bought like one of those really nice masks and gloves because of Naomi Campbell. I'm like, she doesn't get sick on planes. I don't wanna get sick going. And then it turns out like everyone needed a mask and you couldn't get them, and we had one just got scared. I know I got a panic, but we had a listener whose husband had like a liver transplant or something and couldn't get one.

And so IWI was able to send it and I was like, that's so cool how that worked out because like we didn't have our show and nobody could get them. Mm-hmm. I don't even wanna talk about that time. Let's go on. Let's move on. Okay. So Naomi was also the first black model to appear on the covers of French Vogue and Time Magazine.

And beyond the runway. Naomi's activism took shape with her fashion for relief charity, where she supported causes in Africa. Um, and as far as Mia Pharaoh, she was born in 1945 and she was already a seasoned actress by the time she [00:21:00] attended this dinner. So she was known for her roles in Rosemary's Baby and Hannah and her sisters, but she was also a committed humanitarian as a UNICEF goodwill Ambassador.

Mia had made over 20 trips to Darfur working for children affected by war, which is really wild that she ends up at this table when that's like literally the thing she's working, um, working towards to help. So both Naomi and Mia were at Nelson Mandela's dinner for their shared involvement in global causes.

Naomi was supporting an AIDS charity, and Mia was there with her extensive charity work in Africa. But what they didn't know was that this very dinner would tie them to one of the most shocking and controversial legal cases of the time. I got a really good story over here, guys. I was very excited when I got into this.

So let's talk about who else is at the table. So in addition to Naomi and Mia. Other notable guests include Charles Taylor, who was then the president of Liberia, former Cricket star and politician, Imran Kahan, [00:22:00] music producer, Quincy Jones, RIP, and of course Nelson Mandela himself. But let's focus on Charles Taylor.

Do you guys know anything about Charles Taylor? No. Mandy. No, I know. I needed the answer. That was so cute. I'm stuck on cricket player and politician. Yeah. You know what? I don't even know how you, I shouldn't say this. I always make myself look dumb. Cricket it. There's a racket involved, right? Yes. Yeah. Okay.

So nobody actually knows don't gimme the land. Yeah. Or is it the thing that you like. Wait. No, no, no. I think it's a thing with the balls that you fling like this and like you catch that could be a beach game. Was cricket it like a, a leg game. Like soccer. It's, maybe it's polo. We are so American. We're so American.

Well, okay, let's move on. In birth pen. That didn't happen. Um, so I will tell you about Charles Taylor. So he is this warlord. Turned [00:23:00] president who became infamous for his role in Liberia's Civil War and his involvement in the Sierra Leone conflict. So he's accused of using diamonds to fund violence and atrocities, which earned them the nickname Blood Diamonds.

I. I think I saw that movie, blood Diamonds with Leonardo DiCaprio. Yeah. Horrific. So Charles Taylor was later tried at The Hague and his trial would include some unexpected star testimony, although I think you guys will see where I'm going with this story. So let's go back to Naomi. She's seated at the dinner.

Not wearing gloves and does not have a mask on, nor does she have a hazmat suit on. And she's seated near Charles, but she claims later she has no idea who Charles Taylor is to her. It's just another guy at a fancy dinner, which I can buy that. Mm-hmm. I mean, it seems like, especially these charity dinners, I feel like they're, you know.

I don't know. It's like a lot of schmoozing and stuff and food, which is really the thing I would be [00:24:00] lucky for. But later that night, Naomi says that she was woken up in the middle of the night by a knock on her door. So she goes to her door, which already I'm out if I'm in a different country by myself.

And two men are knocking on my door. I'm not answering or I'm playing dead. And uh, she actually opens the door and she said the men were mysterious and unnamed and they simply handed her like a little bag. And she said inside it looked like dirty little pebbles. Those were her words. And she said she didn't think much of it, including, Hey, who sent me dirty little peddle pebbles in the middle of the night?

Also, guys, what are your names? So she just puts the pouch beside her bed. She goes back to sleep. It's a gift. I guess if you're a supermodel though, like, or dirty little pebbles, the weirdest thing you've gotten, you know, probably not. I don't have the kind of beauty that people are like giving me things.

So, um, this could be very normal for her. Who knows? I can't [00:25:00] judge. Listen, drugs. She's like, is this a crack rob? She's like, I, I need my glasses on. I will check in the morning to see exactly what these pebbles are. So the next morning, Naomi tells Mia, Pharaoh and her agent. So Naomi Pharaoh's agent is there about these dirty stones, and according to Naomi, she has no idea that they were diamonds.

Okay. Um, so she decides to pass them along to this guy Jeremy Ratcliffe, who works with Nelson Mandela's Children's Charity. Now that feels like a random. Thing, right? Like, why are you gonna hand these? Like, what if they're magical? What if they're like magic beans and they're, you know. I mean missed opportunities all the way around.

This guy, Jeremy Ratcliffe, he actually keeps these dirty pebbles for years and eventually he hold hands them over to the police in 2010 when the trial for this whole thing goes on. So here's where things get complicated. If they weren't already, Charles Taylor was actually accused of giving those diamonds to Naomi to help fund a weapons [00:26:00] shipment for Sierra Leone Rebels.

These were the same rebels who were using child soldiers to do all kinds of horrific things, including pillaging their way across the country. And Charles had been linked to supporting those rebels, providing them with weapons in exchange for the diamonds, which were mined in conflict zones. The prosecution in Charles Taylor's trial aimed to link these diamonds to him, which is something that Naomi's testimony would be crucial to.

Like, Hey, did he ever give you diamonds? No, they were magic beans. I mean, there's gotta be some conversation. So fast forward for a few years and Naomi's called to testify during Charles Taylor's trial. The trial is all about his role in Liberia's, brutal civil war and his connection to blood diamonds in general.

And, uh, Naomi's reluctant to testify saying she was scared. I don't blame her. And she even claims that she didn't know who actually sent her these diamonds, but she does confirm receiving, again, dirty looking pebbles, and says she just [00:27:00] wasn't interested in them. And that's why she gives them to Jeremy.

But where it gets juicier is Mia Pharaoh's there. Activist galore and she's at the same dinner and had breakfast with Naomi the next morning, and she says something very different happens. She says at breakfast, she's like, guys, look at this. I got a huge diamond from Charles Taylor. No pebbles, there's no, not even a crack rock.

There's nothing. And so, and so Mia Pharaoh testifies that Naomi was actually excited about this and says that Naomi tells her that the men that visit her that night, um, that came to her room that night said that this is a gift from Charles. And so her whole defense of like, I don't know who that guy is.

Continues to go out the window when Mia is like, found a picture. Here you are. Here's Charles. You guys know each other and you talked. And so it was in direct contradiction to Naomi's claims, of course, that she never met him. And obviously that [00:28:00] nothing happened. So what does this all mean? Well, it helped the prosecution prove that Charles Taylor wasn't just trading these diamonds.

He was giving them away as gifts. Now, I don't know really to me as I read through it, it sounded like they were saying that maybe Naomi was a middleman. She gives, she gets the diamonds, she gives them to Jeremy. I don't know if that's true, but that's kind of how I understood it. And this is a direct link to his role in the Civil War and how he was using diamonds to fund weapons.

So in 2012, after all the back and forth drama. Charles Taylor is convicted of 11 charges, including war crimes and crimes against humanity. He was sentenced to 50 years in prison, and the Naomi Campbell incident is mentioned in the ruling. So what seemed kind of like the celebrity side story ends up playing a crucial role in actually sending him to prison.

So Naomi did face some backlash because she really was reluctant to testify, which. I can understand not wanting to be, you know, on the wrong end of a war crime [00:29:00] trial, but she said she was later used as a pawn, which I can understand that Mia didn't quite see it the same, and she was willing to testify as to what she knew to get Charles Taylor in prison.

So while this dinner was full of high profile names, it ends up being the backdrop to one of the most high profile war crimes trials in modern history. Wild. Wild. Oh my God. And like, are Mia and Naomi so cool? Like, is Naomi like you snitched on me? Can't imagine. When she came out with a picture, I was like, okay.

They were believing you. You can like let it go. I'm sure Nelson Mandela has a guest list. Come on. Yeah. But yeah, that's, I mean, it's so weird how different the story is like. Somebody gave me pebbles too. I got a big diamond as a gift from this guy, you know, so, wow. Mm-hmm. Yeah, it's, it's unfortunate. And, uh, I'm glad he's obviously, um, put away.

Just imagine being like a celebrity and finding yourself in such. [00:30:00] Precarious situations. Like why is a supermodel at the table with these people? You know? The whole thing is a little confusing. I guess it was all for charity. I'm very interested in what actually happened that night, because who opens the door for pebbles?

It doesn't, bam, bam. I don't know. This isn't, yeah. I keep getting taken back to Somebody needs to make a movie. Yeah. So anyway. Sarah, do you have a story to share with us? I do, and I'm so excited about it because I do not consider myself like a celebrity fan girl. But if I had to pick like one person that I would fan girl for, it's Larry David.

Yes. I'm so excited. I love Larry David. Um, and we have appropriately named this curbing a death sentence. Ooh, nice. So this next story is kind of unbelievable, but it's very true. So imagine your life is hanging in the balance and the person who saves you is Larry David the most reluctant person to save you to, right?

Yes. That guy's not doing anything. [00:31:00] The guy from Caribbean enthusiasm with all of his awkward pauses and like weird nuances. But trust us. It's not just a quirky plot twist. This is a real story about justice and timing and the power of a random camera shot. So in 2003, Juan Catalan was arrested for a murder he did not commit.

A 16-year-old girl named Martha Puebla had been shot outside her home, and she had most recently testified in a gang case involving Juan's brother. So unfortunately for Juan, that connection was enough for police to zero in on him. They claimed a witness, saw him, and with little elves charged him with murder and he was facing the death penalty.

He swore he was innocent. He said that the night of the murder, he was at a Dodgers game with his 6-year-old daughter. The issue was, it was 2003 people had cell phones, but they weren't really at baseball games. Right. Taking selfies and recording everything. So how [00:32:00] do you, you find someone in a sea of over 50,000 people, his attorneys were obviously stressed out.

They started calling around, trying to get footage from. Security broadcasters, I mean basically anyone. And isn't this like years later that they're like finally realizing like, oh, so anything they have is. Will they even have it, you know? Right. That's what I thought. Like, oh my gosh, now my life depends on you seeing if they save security footage, I'm screwed.

Like, oh my gosh. It's just like, hold onto your concert and sporting band tickets. People save a life. So they do get a lead, and it just turns out that HBO, not to be confused with Max had been filming Curb Enthusiasm at the stadium that night. Then it gets even weirder. They were filming an episode where Larry David picks up a sex worker so he can use the carpool lane.

Okay. I very much remember that episode. So funny. Absolutely loved it. I can't remember the actress's name [00:33:00] who played the sex worker, but we just looked it up. Kim Whitley. Oh, I loved it. It was, isn't she amazing? She was so great in that part. I love that episode. It's so good. Classic Larry. And guess where they filmed?

Right near Juan's section. Oh my gosh. So the defense team gets access to like the raw, unedited footage, and they scroll through every frame and boom, there's Juan sitting in his seat with his daughter clear as day. And that footage saved his life. I mean, with a timestamp and eyewitness verification, prosecutors dropped the charges.

Wow. And he was released after spending five months in jail for something that he did not do. He spent. Five months away from his daughter with death looming over him and a comedy show gave him back his future and he meets Larry David and tells him, you saved my life. And Larry being Larry says, I'm glad I could help, I guess.

Um, and there's a Netflix documentary on it [00:34:00] called The Long Shot. It's really good. And it reminds us that sometimes justice hinges on pure luck or a B roll camera. Okay. Did you guys see the long shot? Have you seen that documentary by chance? Yes, man, it is. It is so wild for him to have been in that section, for it to be a real game, for it to be that day.

Like everything had to align for that. Like imagine if Juan had gone to the bathroom, like during that time. I mean, everything depended on this one thing. And Larry really, honestly, every other celebrity would've milked this to death. Mm-hmm. But Larry, David's kind of like, uh, why are you asking me any questions?

Like, he just doesn't care. He's so funny. He's amazing. Wasn't there another like, celebrity sighting Super David Osborne, super Dave Osborne or something like a, like a, a stunt man, something. Oh, she was gone from that time. Uh uh What did they call him? Finklestein? No, that wasn't his. It was Adam. Yes. Oh my gosh, yes.

I had to look it up. I had to look it up because I was like, who is this? I had no idea. [00:35:00] And, um, Funkhouser that was also, sorry. Oh, from the show? Yeah. I'm sorry. I was just sitting here looking very confused. Marty Funkhouser. Mm-hmm. What were you saying about him though? I'm sorry. I think they said in the long shot that that was part of the footage, like the first raw footage that they found.

They couldn't, they said it wasn't clear enough and then he remembered seeing Super Dave Osborne and was like, wait. But like there was this part where like, I might have been like. On Amazing. You know, even closer up when I saw him close up. Yeah. Or something like that. God was his soul. He passed away. But, um, no, you cannot forget that voice.

No, I would've remembered that too. Did you ever watch Arrested Development by chance? Okay. So he was on Arrested Development. He was the Yeah, I loved him. This has nothing to do with that exactly. But I was at my husband's step grandmother's funeral like four years ago. Mm-hmm. And I literally said, oh, when I read the, her whole name Funkhouser [00:36:00] was in there.

And I was like, what are the, my brain only went to, I was like, so sorry. This is so disrespectful. But yes. Is there, um, are you. Did you watch Seinfeld too, Sarah? I did not. I did not watch Seinfeld either. I not enough to be able to talk about it. Sure. I've seen like a handful of episodes. Um, I love the, what's that one called?

I think like V one, the Race. Oh yeah. Oh yeah. That one's really good. Mm-hmm. Yeah. But besides them. No, that's great. But Mandy, the reason I brought that up is Larry David was a creator of Seinfeld. Mm-hmm. And that's why he is a it ma It makes sense actually that I brought it there. Yes. Yeah. But that's a crazy story.

We, we did cover, like cover it years and years ago and that's one of those that just stays with you because man, everything had to, had to go right and wrong. Um, yeah. For it. But to have been in that situation really. But I love that story. Well, um, thank you guys for sharing your stories if you would like Yes, we have a quick [00:37:00] game.

Sure. Should be pretty easy. It's, uh, who does it better and it's out of the celebrities we talked about today. So it's Mia, Naomi, Ashton, David. Larry, and so I'm just gonna ask a question. Just give me your honest answer. So who out of this group would be most likely to throw a wild party? Naomi. Yeah, that's a good one.

I gotta go with Naomi. Okay. I'm gonna give you all a point. I bet Diddy was at her party question the other way around. She wasn't at Diddy's parties. He was at her parties. I bet he was learning things at her parties. Not, uh. Allegedly. Allegedly, of course, question number two, who's most likely to be on Diddy's party list?

And that is sitting here. So nice job. Way to bring that together. Yeah, so, so funny. Do we think Naomi's most likely to be on his list or him on hers? I, I would say her. On his. Okay. Her on his. Yes. I mean, she [00:38:00] doesn't like airport germs, so I don't imagine, imagine that. Good point. I mean, if you don't like airport germs, you're not gonna like, uh, whatever they call, call whatever they call freak.

I was gonna say freak fest, but same thing. Yeah. Freak calls, free calls Sarah. There could be an episode of Larry David or of Curb Your Enthusiasm where Larry David finds himself. Oh, freak off is trying to get himself, that would actually, we have to get this to him because I think that would be like prime time television.

It absolutely could happen to him. Okay. Yes. So my next question is, who's most likely to give a TED talk about aliens at some point? My brain just was going crazy, so. David Swimmer. I'm gonna go David Swimmer as well. I like, you know the paleontologist? Is that what he was on? Friends? He was all about, he just looks like the kind of person who would do that, so.

Okay. Rude. We don't What does an alien, looker, or like look like? Okay. Who's the most likely to post a cryptic social media message that goes viral, [00:39:00] Naomi. I'm gonna go with Naomi now. I know. Me too, right? Mm-hmm. She just kind of seems like she's, she's, I can't believe we haven't seen one about Mia, to be quite honest with you, from Naomi.

Right? Right. Okay. Um, how about this? Who would be most likely to start a podcast? Ooh, probably Larry. David, do you. I'm gonna give you a No, I'm sorry. Yeah, I don't think so. He's not gonna be on your podcast. He's not gonna listen to your podcast. He's not gonna even show up the first day of his own podcast.

No, he just won't out. I'm gonna say Mia Farrell, just 'cause no one else makes sense and I don't know anything about her. I am going to give you that one because it does seem like something. Possibly she would do to teach people something. She's just one of those kind of, okay. Lovely people. Okay. I don't know if you guys watch this, but I've just started watching it this season and so you can't judge me who would be the best to host Love Island.

I've never seen it. Ashton. Oh, I forgot. I forgot about Ashton until this very moment. Oh yes. I stand by my answers though. [00:40:00] Okay. Oh, Mandy, do you have an answer to stand by? I think Ashton seems like the most, um, reality TV show hosty to me. Yeah. Okay. Mm-hmm. I'll give it to you, but. But I don't know. I mean, I just started watching Love Island, the Ariana Maddox, I think is her name, the host.

Stunning. So like they like are hosted by these incredibly beautiful women. So, you know, you could go Naomi, but Ashton just gives like affable and charisma love show that to him. She whatcha even doing here. Well, because you know Nico, Melissa can't stand Melissa, but you know, he hosts. Love Isly. And so I'm just thinking like Danisha Melissa has been like personally petitioning for them to get kicked off the hosting position of love Isly for at least like the last four seasons.

She's like, the lash cliches are back again. What did they do? Listen, they never, they never asked the right questions at the reunions. It makes me so upset. Well, Vanessa will always ask. When are you gonna have a baby? When are you gonna have a baby? And it just [00:41:00] makes me crazy. Says No woman ever. No woman ever says that to anybody.

No. No. It's so ugh. I'm always just like, I like Jessica better, I guess. I don't know. I don't like him though. And ugh, I gotta stop. Maybe I'm actually getting heated. Okay, let's see. Um, two more questions. Who's most likely to get involved in a heated Twitter debate with a celebrity? It's not. We have to take Naomi out because we know Naomi would be number one with a bullet.

Mm-hmm. So who do we think.

Hmm. Larry, David, but on Curb Your Enthusiasm. There you go. Okay. Yeah. Not in real life where he doesn't know that he actually is doing it and it's just live Tweet. Oh, tweeting. That's incredible. Tweet like maybe he thinks he's like. Texting them. Yes. He thinks he's texting. Oh, I think that happened on Veep and that was one of my favorite things ever.

Um, okay. So last one is, who would be most likely to appear, or who would you like to see on a, a celebrity version of Survivor? Ooh, that's a good [00:42:00] one. I wanna see Naomi camp. I wanna see somebody who you know is gonna struggle in a survival situation. So I wanna see like the pampered supermodel. Get out there and do it.

I like it. I'm with you. That's good tv. I'm with you on that. And it has nut suit. Yes. Imagine like, I think they all get to bring one comfort thing or one like thing with them.

That would be amazing. I think we should push for it. We should, uh, try and get this to happen. But thank you guys so much for joining us. This was so much fun. I hope you enjoyed it. So much Fun.
