Who Is Michelle Hadley?
Michelle Hadley was a hardworking, ambitious young woman who had built a successful marketing career in Anaheim, California. In 2013, she met Ian Diaz, a Deputy United States Marshal, on an online dating platform. The relationship moved quickly, and the couple eventually became engaged and purchased a condo together. But just two months after moving in, Michelle realized the relationship was toxic and left. What followed was a bitter legal dispute over the condo that would ultimately set the stage for one of the most elaborate framing plots law enforcement had ever seen.
The Framing Begins: Angela Diaz and the Lilith Emails
Shortly after the breakup, Ian met and quickly married a woman named Angela Diaz, who soon announced she was pregnant with twins. But the couple's new life was quickly overshadowed when Angela began receiving horrifying, threatening emails from an account calling itself Lilith of Truth. The messages were filled with religious imagery, death threats, and references to kidnapping Angela's unborn children. Ian and Angela immediately blamed Michelle, pointing to the religious language in her previous emails to Ian as proof.
The harassment soon escalated beyond email. Strange men began showing up at Ian and Angela's condo in Anaheim, claiming they were responding to a Craigslist advertisement inviting them to act out a violent rape fantasy. With Ian aggressively pushing for her arrest and using his status as a federal law enforcement officer to pressure local police, Michelle was taken into custody and charged with stalking, making criminal threats, and multiple counts of attempted rape. She spent 88 terrifying days in jail while her family fought to prove her innocence.
The Truth Unravels: Angela's History of Lies
When investigators finally looked into the IP addresses behind the threatening emails, they discovered that the messages had originated from inside Ian and Angela's condo, as well as from Angela's own cell phone and her father's house in Arizona. Angela had used at least eight different accounts to impersonate Michelle, send threats to herself, and communicate with the men being directed to the condo.
As the investigation deepened, Angela's past began to surface. Years before she met Ian, she had convinced a boyfriend and a close friend that she was an attorney dying from stage four cancer, fabricating medical records and doctor's notes to support the lie. Her supposed twin pregnancy with Ian's babies was also completely fake. The sonogram images she had shown Ian were taken from the internet and belonged to other patients entirely. Ian later found pregnancy tests stored in plastic bags with blue marker drawn on them to make them appear positive.
Angela was arrested and eventually pleaded guilty to ten felonies in October 2017. She was sentenced to five years in state prison. The judge described her actions as evil and calculated, calling the case unlike anything he had previously encountered.
The Federal Investigation and the Conviction of Ian Diaz
For years, Ian maintained that he was just another one of Angela's victims. But Michelle and her family never believed it, and neither did federal investigators. The Department of Justice opened its own investigation and assigned a digital forensics examiner named Jason Higley to review the case.
What Jason found was damning. Digital evidence proved that Ian had personally located and responded to Craigslist advertisements, communicated with men being directed to the condo, accessed Angela's accounts while posing as her in communications with police, and forwarded fabricated evidence to detectives. On some occasions, he even altered the threatening messages before submitting them. Most significantly, fragments of a Lilith of Truth message were recovered from Ian's government-issued Department of Justice laptop.
In May 2021, a federal grand jury indicted Ian for his participation in the scheme. In March 2023, he was convicted on all four federal counts, including conspiracy to commit cyberstalking, cyberstalking, perjury, and obstruction of a federal investigation. He was sentenced to ten years and one month in federal prison. In January 2025, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals rejected his appeal and affirmed all four convictions. In June 2025, the United States Supreme Court denied his petition for review, leaving his sentence intact.

On the exact day Ian was convicted, Michelle gave birth to a daughter. She has returned to school and work and continues rebuilding the life that was interrupted in 2016.
