Mandy: [00:00:00] An 80-year-old grandmother drives to a grocery store on a summer morning waving at a man she clearly knows. Hours later, her Jeep turns up, abandoned at a motel, wiped clean of fingerprints, and the woman herself is nowhere to be found. Mandy: Hey guys, and welcome to the Moms and Mysteries podcast, a True Crime podcast featuring myself, Mandy, and my dear friend Melissa. Hi, Melissa.
Melissa: Hi Mandy.
How are you?
Mandy: I am doing well. We are recording this episode so far in advance. Uh, by the time this episode comes out, we will be back from Crime Con, but we actually haven't gone yet, so we're in one of those weird, What do you call it? It's like a weird purgatory.
Melissa: I'm just gonna let you keep trying. I didn't, I didn't know what it
was, but you could keep trying.
Um, yeah, we're in a weird purgatory at an episode. Purgatory, so you're getting this later, but we're
recording it earlier,
Mandy: There you go.
There you go. This is [00:01:00] actually a really sad story and it deals with a topic that, as a lot of our listeners know, is very dear to my heart. Well, not dear to my heart, but it's an issue that I care about a lot, which is, elderly people being abused in any type of way.
And, uh, this story definitely infuriated me for sure, for that reason. Edna Ruth Nation Settles was born on January 11th, 1941 in Travelers rest, South Carolina. She was the third of eight children born to James and Bernice Nations, and her life was never small. She actually made history as the first woman bail bondsman in South Carolina. She owned a one bail bonding and her reputation was tough iron willed, and she was described as being a little flamboyant. Edna also once owned a restaurant, but when she was unable to get a liquor license, she decided to burn the place down herself rather than let it sit empty.
And
Melissa: Like actual burn it down Wow.
Mandy: kind of a. If I can't have it, no one will sort of attitude I [00:02:00] guess. but that's just how Edna was. Yeah, she was just that kind of no-nonsense, bold type of woman. Her friends described her as fun, stubborn, and full of grit. Though she was among the older generation, Edna did enjoy the Facebook where she shared Maxine comics, funny quips and memes with captions.
Like my fashion style is called, whatever the heck, still fits me. Same Edna.
Melissa: Mm-hmm.
Mandy: Even at 80, Edna was as active as ever. She loved going to honky tonks with her friends and dancing until closing time, and she was a natural caretaker at heart. Even since the age of 25, she had set aside time just to sit with elderly people who needed company.
Even when she herself was elderly, she still continued that tradition. Edna had six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, but she was truly the kind of woman who would never let age define her. On August 28th, 2021, alarm bells went off when Edna failed to show up for a commitment she had [00:03:00] made, which is something she would literally never dream of doing.
This is the same woman who'd spent decades showing up for others. She was not the type to just skip out on her responsibilities or flake on her plans, calls to Edna's phone when unanswered and visits to her house turned up. Nothing. Not only was Edna gone, but her 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee was also missing.
For days, investigators searched for Edna, and on September 3rd they finally caught a break when they found the Jeep parked outside a Best Western hotel in traveler's rest about seven miles south of her home. When police pulled the surveillance footage from the hotel, they were left with more questions than answers.
In the video, an unidentified man is seen wiping fingerprints from Edna's Jeep before calmly walking away toward a nearby food lion grocery store. An elderly woman vanishing without a trace is alarming enough, but a stranger wiping down her car was certainly suspicious in the most chilling way.
Melissa: From the surveillance footage, authorities were able to piece together a timeline. Edna had left her [00:04:00] home at nine 30 that morning and drove her Jeep to the Food Lion. She pulled in and parked next to a silver Chevy Cruze and sat there and waited at 9:39 AM a man in his fifties walked out of the grocery store and waved Edna as if they knew each other. Then he walked to the cruise park next to her. The man grabbed a small bag from inside the cruise and then casually got into the passenger side of Edna's Jeep with the bag. It was later determined that the bag had a four pack of yogurt inside, which doesn't really seem that significant on the surface, but it would become a critical piece of evidence later. Once the man was in her car, Edna drove away. Hours later at 2:02 PM the Jeep reappeared on camera at the Food Lion again. But this time The man got outta the driver's side. Edna was still inside the vehicle, but she appeared motionless in the footage. The man walked across the lot and got into his Chevy Cruze and pulled it around and parked next to Edna's Jeep. The video showed the man helping Edna out of her own car and [00:05:00] into his But because of the angle of the way the cars were positioned, it was hard to see just how much help Edna actually needed from what they could see it looked like Edna never moved on her own. At 2 0 7, the man left Edna sitting in his cruise while he drove her Jeep down the road to the Best Western where he wiped down the steering wheel, handles interior and exterior of the Jeep before leaving it parked at the motel and walking back to the food lion where he left his vehicle at 2:14 PM he got inside the cruise and drove off with Edna still inside. So at this point, the number one mission was to figure out who this guy was. And thankfully, that wouldn't take too long. police obtained records from the Food Lion and learned that the man who climbed into Edna's Jeep had bought a four pack of yogurt just before getting into Edna's car.
used his Food Lion frequent shopper card and that led police straight to him. Police learned. The man was 59-year-old. Daniel Glenn Prince. He was a handyman from Boston, North Carolina where he lived with his wife, Kathy. [00:06:00] Later when police searched Edna's home, they found three of those same yogurts that Daniel bought in Edna's fridge, but that fourth cup was unaccounted for
Mandy: So who was Daniel Prince? Exactly? Well, he wasn't just some ordinary handyman. He actually had a long criminal history that included firearm possession, and assault and battery. According to the US Attorney's office in 1997, Daniel was convicted of kidnapping a woman in Michigan.
He picked up the 25-year-old while she was walking home in Waterford, about 35 miles outside of Detroit. He knocked the woman out, cold found her wrists with duct tape, shackled her ankles, and shoved her into his SUV. When the woman regained consciousness, she tried to reach for a flashlight, but Daniel threatened to kill her.
The woman fought back. She found an Allen wrench and used it to stab Daniel repeatedly until he eventually threw her outta the car and sped off. The woman survived and Daniel was caught and arrested. He was sentenced to 13 to 30 years for kidnapping, and he served his time and was released in [00:07:00] 2009. He was on parole until 2011. But what was even more chilling is that Daniel actually wasn't a stranger to Edna. They had known each other for about four years. After his release from prison, Daniel relocated to Gaston County North Carolina and posted an ad offering handyman services. It wasn't long before he met Edna, and according to the Greenville News, they actually had an intimate relationship.
By September 9th, less than two weeks after Edna disappeared, authorities were ready to move in. On Daniel that day, they charged him with grand larceny for the theft of Edna's Jeep, and he was arrested at his home in Bostic. His home was searched and they found multiple firearms, reportedly 22 of them and electronic devices.
Since Daniel had a previous felony conviction, he of course was not allowed to have guns, certainly not 22 of them, so he was also charged with several state firearm violations. Further searching revealed legal documents including a driver's license and [00:08:00] passport, bank statements and debit cards, all belonging to a 66-year-old woman named Nancy Rigo.
A debit card in her name was also found inside Daniel's wallet when he was arrested. When he was asked who Nancy was, Daniel said that he was her power of attorney. Authorities looked into this claim and learned that Daniel actually was, in fact, her power of attorney. She had signed those documents in September of 2017 while she and Daniel were dating.
However, police also found out that Nancy had been missing since November of 2017, shortly after her own mother passed away, and we have so much more to get into after a quick break to hear a word from this week's sponsors.

Melissa: Mandy, I felt like I blinked. Summer, flew by Fall is creeping in and before we know it, it's gonna be December and I'll be standing in the middle of holiday chaos, wondering how I even got here. That also means That holiday shopping is right around the corner, and I've learned if I don't plan ahead, it
sneaks up fast.
Mandy: Same here. [00:09:00] And honestly, that's why I use Rakuten all year, not just for the holidays. Rakuten makes shopping feel more rewarding because you can stack cash back on top of sales at places. I'm already shopping, like Target for everyday stuff. Sephora for beauty and Best Buy. when I need electronics, it makes a big difference knowing I'm saving even outside of the big holiday rush.
Melissa: And what I love is really how simple it is. Stores pay Rakuten for sending them shoppers, and Rakuten shares that money back with you as cash back. Then you get it straight through PayPal or even as a check. It's straightforward. No hoops, no weird fine print. it's honestly the easiest way I've found to make sure I'm actually getting the most
out of my shopping.
Mandy: Exactly, and it's not just about gifts. It works for fashion, beauty, home travel, really anything. You're already buying. 17 million Rakuten members are already saving and together they've earned over $4.6 billion in cash back. With multiple cats in my house, I've tried just about every litter out there and nothing compares to pretty litter. It's soft on their paws, easy for me to maintain, and it actually keeps the box fresher way longer.
Melissa: That's what sold me too. The odor control is really amazing. My house smells like a home, not like a litter box, which is really a big deal when you've
got pets.
Mandy: The health monitoring gives me such peace of mind. The crystals change color to track things like acidity, alkalinity, and even the presence of blood in your cat's urine with multiple cats. That kind of insight is huge.
Melissa: Plus it's delivered free to your door so there's no heavy bags or last minute store runs. And and because it's ultra absorbent, you use less litter overall, which means it saves money and

Melissa: So before the break, we were learning about Edna Settles a tough and funny 80-year-old grandmother who vanished without a trace. There was surveillance footage that brought police to a handyman named Daniel Prince, and when police arrested him, they ended up discovering A link to another missing woman named Nancy Rigo. So let's take a little detour here and talk about Nancy. Nancy Sellers was born on March 8th, 1951. She grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina, and she went to Gehringer High School and later to King's College in 1969. Nancy married a fireman named James Ellis, but they divorced four years later and in 1997. Nancy married her second husband, Dennis, or Buddy Rigo, and the couple were still married. [00:12:00] In 2008, Nancy worked as a call center agent for Eastern Airlines Before later, reinventing herself as a massage therapist. she ran her own business and she was always meticulous about her appearance. Friends described her as being full of humor and joy. She was really funny and she just loved her life. One friend said that Nancy was just unforgettable when Nancy first met Daniel Prince, both of them were still married. Nancy had actually responded to his handyman ad, and from there a relationship began. Nancy had even introduced Daniel to her mother named Dolores, who was recovering from an ankle injury. At this time, Dolores was a woman who had seen a lot in her lifetime. She lived through the Great Depression, and she raised Nancy and her brother Mark, and eventually became the matriarch of the family. Her husband, Charles Sellers, was a veteran who served in both World War II and the Korean War, and he also received a Purple Heart. Dolores worked hard her whole life, and eventually she [00:13:00] became the general manager for Morris e Trotter and son, a property management and real estate company in Charlotte. She retired back in 1987, but by the time she was in her late eighties, Dolores was still spry independent and very well loved family members. Said she was beautiful, she loved to sing, and that she reminded people of Elizabeth Taylor. Dolores died at home on November 8th, 2017, at the age of 88. On paper, it seemed like a totally natural, normal death.
So no autopsy was performed, but now in light of everything else that the police were uncovering they wondered if there was more to it than that. And right after Dolores died, her daughter Nancy, also mysteriously
vanished.
Mandy: As the authorities dug into Nancy's disappearance, the pattern was impossible to ignore. The family said Nancy had suddenly gone off the grid with Daniel after her mom died. They said that every once in a while they would get a text or email from Nancy, but she refused to [00:14:00] meet anyone face to face or even talk on the phone, and the messages that she was sending didn't really even sound much like her at all.
Meanwhile, Nancy's bank account kept receiving her social security deposits and her account had near daily activity on it with almost every transaction taking place in Bostic and Forest City, North Carolina, which is where Daniel lived. What was even more peculiar was that the transactions on Nancy's account were all very similar to the types of charges and debits on Daniel's own bank account, and to make things even more clear, the transactions on Nancy's account stopped after Daniel was arrested.
So now it was absolutely positive that Daniel had been using Nancy's bank account as if it were his own. It was reported by the Charlotte Observer in June of 2018 that Daniel had gotten into a wreck while driving Nancy's car. The vehicle was towed, but it was never picked up, and eventually it was auctioned off.
After Daniel's arrest, police continued to search his property. At this point, they had more than enough reason to go back and look for more, and what they [00:15:00] ended up finding would take Edna's case from horrifying to unimaginable.
Melissa: A federal investigation into Edna's appearance was opened on September 13th. Daniel met with investigators twice that month, and during those interviews he said Edna was his friend that he visited her home several times in the previous month. He admitted to traveling from North Carolina to visit with Edna on August 27th, but he was adamant that he dropped Edna off at home after he left the Food Lion parking lot. He also said that Edna had recently hired a PI to help with her daughter's pending divorce, but said that Edna had become scared of the pi. So he said the reason he wiped down Edna's car was because he was nervous about being involved in this situation with the pi, which is an excuse. It is a reason. It doesn't make a lick of sense, but it is just that. So during the investigation, police spoke with Daniel's wife Kathy, who informed them that the Chevy Cruze he was driving that day was [00:16:00] actually hers. Daniel said he was taking the vehicle for the day for work, and he was gone most of the day. He came home sometime between three and 4:00 PM Kathy said she had no idea that Daniel drove her car to South Carolina. She also said that she had bought Daniel a Jeep Renegade after he wrecked his other car, which actually wasn't really his car. It was Nancy's car, but it was in the shop having the AC fixed, and he was driving a rental car in the meantime. So investigators of course, contacted the auto shop to confirm this and learned that Daniel had also been asking about the cost of replacing the rear interior panels of his Jeep. Later when they searched the Jeep, they found that the rear cargo area floor panel was missing. On September 23rd, 2021, authorities executed another search warrant where they were hoping to find evidence that tied Daniel to both Edna and Nancy's disappearances and what they ended up finding was really chilling. They discovered a firearm in his home that [00:17:00] Edna's family had reported missing shortly after she disappeared. And that was really the direct link between Daniel and Edna that they needed. They also found jewelry that belonged to Edna Prescription Pill bottles and Nancy's name from way back in 2017 and even Dolores's Wallet. But what really started to tell the story was the black bag they found with an assortment of items that seemed like something from a criminal's toolkit. There were zip ties, a taser lubricant, and a plastic bag with crushed pills labeled Ativan. Police also found multiple prescription bottles with Nancy's name on them from 2017. Among those were prescriptions for Tramadol, which is a narcotic
Cyclobenzaprine, which is a muscle relaxer, and of course Lorazepam, which is a
sedative.
Mandy: Then on October 9th, Kathy was at home in the process of removing chickens from the property with the help of another person. That other person happened to wander near a bee box, which is used for raising honeybees that was located about 75 yards from the house [00:18:00] surrounded by trees. When the person opened the box, instead of seeing honeycombs and bumblebees inside, they were confused to find that there was a purse in there.
And this wasn't just a random purse, it was Edna's purse. Inside were her Jeep Keys, rope, zip ties medication, a torn Walmart bag with a knot tied in it, and a pair of green rubber gloves. There was also an empty yogurt container inside, and it happened to be the exact same brand that Daniel had purchased at the Food Lion.
About 30 feet away from where the purse was found. Authorities found a missing vehicle panel from Daniel's Jeep Renegade, and they also found a black trash bag containing a tarp, a pair of women's shoes, and a metal bracelet. The empty yogurt cup was taken into evidence and the remnants were tested.
Shockingly, they found traces Of those three medications that we just mentioned, cyclobenzaprine, Tramadol, and Lorazepam. All three of these drugs are powerful sedatives. Even in small amounts, they could incapacitate someone, [00:19:00] but especially an elderly woman like Edna whose system wouldn't be able to process them as quickly.
DNA testing revealed that Edna's DNA was on the Walmart bag, recovered from the B Box. The green rubber gloves had both Edna and Daniel's DNA on them, and the zip ties had Edna's DNA on them. Police believe this evidence was telling a story. That Edna had been drugged with the yogurt, bound with zip ties, suffocated with a plastic bag and handled by Daniel who tried to cover his tracks to confirm their suspicions.
Police brought in cadaver dogs and on October 10th, Daniel's property was sniffed out. The dog gave the unmistakable alert for human decomposition, but authorities were not able to locate any remains. And we have more to get into after one last break to hear a word from this week's sponsors.

Melissa: And now back to the episode So before the break, police have now found Edna's purse and evidence that is pointing that something nefarious has happened and that Daniel is involved. So finally, investigators confronted Daniel with the mountain of evidence they had against him and this time he broke. Daniel told him he wanted to disclose his sins and he admitted that he knew it meant he'd spent the rest of his life in prison. but he said he wanted to come clean. Eventually, he still wanted to talk to his attorney. He did admit that he had information about the deaths of five different individuals. So in that interview, Daniel gave them enough to confirm what they feared, which was that Edna was no longer alive. Daniel said he could show officers where her body [00:22:00] was. Daniel described other deaths as well. He said that he had hypothetically helped a close friend of his with the euthanasia of a family member, and then the friend had feelings of remorse and planned on going to the police about it. Daniel said these were the first and second bodies. It's very possible that he was referring to Dolores and Nancy here. He went on to describe a friend he was trying to help that ended up dying, but he did not report the death to authorities and said he disposed of the body so he could continue to collect the friend's social security benefits. This could also be in reference to Nancy Daniel talked about another incident where someone tried to rob him, but the robbery didn't go as planned. Daniel ended up killing the robber, and then he drove to a rural area to dispose of the body before cleaning up the rest of the evidence. When he was asked specifically about Edna, Daniel declined to give additional details without a lawyer, but he said he could take police to the location of Edna's body within three [00:23:00] feet.
He was very specific about that. Unfortunately, months passed before Daniel actually followed through on that offer. On May 16th, 2022, Daniel finally did what he promised and he led investigators to Edna's remains. Her body was buried in a wooded area on a farm property in Rutherford County, North Carolina, not very far from Daniel's own home. Deputies from the Greenville County Sheriff's Office helped recover her remains. Once Edna's body was found, Daniel ultimately confessed to killing 88-year-old Dolores seller score in November of 2017, then shooting her daughter Nancy two months later in January of 2018. Then he said he murdered another woman in September, 2018, and this was a 61-year-old woman named Lee Goodman. He said that he only knew her for a few days and he killed her at his property in Gaston County. Court records note that there was some evidence that the woman had lived there briefly before her death [00:24:00] And though Daniel had initially claimed to have murdered a total of five people, he only confessed to four. And it doesn't appear that there actually was a fifth victim or that person was just never identified. The families of Nancy and Lee were told by police that the women's remains would likely never be found because Daniel had apparently disposed of the bodies with chemicals and a barrel, their remains were unrecoverable.
Mandy: So we've talked about Dolores, Nancy, and Edna, but Lee Goodman had her own story as well. She was born around 1957 and got married as a teenager to a man named Mike. At 19, she gave birth to her first daughter Michelle, who she was living in Sarasota, Florida with at the time of her death.
Michelle was just four years old when her parents divorced, and from there, her childhood became a cycle of back and forth. Sometimes she would live with Lee and sometimes she would live with her dad. Lee's first marriage ended in divorce and she remarried, but that marriage also ended in divorce. By that time, Lee now had two toddlers to care for and [00:25:00] found herself needing public assistance, but she was determined to push forward.
She enrolled in college and got a degree in occupational therapy from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Lee's daughter described her as being very strong and very smart. She had the ability to juggle a lot. At the same time, and Lee worked with kids in juvenile detention.
She eventually remarried briefly and had a fourth daughter. Lee's family says that she always believed that people were complex and there was no such thing as monsters. She would have deep conversations with her daughter, Michelle, about philosophy and psychology. She just really loved to ponder what motivates people and why they do the things they do.
Eventually Lee reconnected with Michelle's father, Mike, and they spent another five happy years together before they ended up splitting for good. But Lee's life was also marked by mental illness. She had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizoaffective disorder. She experienced breakdowns and she would be unhoused for stretches of time [00:26:00] before reappearing at random.
Lee always had her cell phone though, and sometimes she would just show up at Michelle's house out of nowhere. Michelle said the last time she saw her mom in Sarasota in 2017, she gave her a long hug and said, please be careful. But Lee was a traveler. She'd send texts from all over the place. She would be one minute in Cape Cod, the next in California.
Really, wherever she just happened to be at the time is where she was. Sometimes she'd send photos of road signs just to show where she was at. She celebrated her mother's 80th birthday in Sarasota, and just before she turned 60, she went and visited her sister in Oregon. So she was really all over the
Melissa: Yeah.
Mandy: In September of 2018 as Hurricane Florence was approaching the Carolinas, Lee was at a rest stop hitchhiking when she crossed paths with Daniel Prince, who she said was handsome with blue eyes.
Her cell phone powered off on September 11th and came back on briefly a few days later. Around that time she was seen at a restaurant with [00:27:00] Daniel. Occasionally Lee's daughters would get a text from her phone, but Lee herself never appeared again.
Melissa: By the spring of 2022, investigators and prosecutors were ready to move the case from investigation to courtroom. Since Daniel had transported Edna across state lines, her case landed in federal jurisdiction. On March 17th, 2022, federal prosecutors charged Daniel with kidnapping resulting in death in Edna's case. Three months later, Daniel entered a plea agreement with the US Attorney's office, and under that agreement, the death penalty was taken off the table. At his sentencing, Daniel addressed the court. He said he was sorry and he asked for forgiveness, but he acknowledged that his apology could not undo what he had done. The judge ultimately imposed the maximum punishment possible, which was life in federal prison with no parole, which you have this note here. There's no parole in the federal system. I don't think I realized
that
Mandy: I didn't think I
realized that either.
Melissa: I like that [00:28:00] we don't say we
didn't know,
we just didn't realize, and we're not even sure. Daniel also waived his right to appeal both his conviction and his sentence, Meaning he will spend the rest of his life in custody, barring some completely extraordinary development happening. Greenville County, sheriff Hobart Lewis said Daniel is a serial killer.
He was a sick minded individual that preyed on the elderly and females the courtroom. Those who knew Daniel shared their reactions as well. One woman that had previously been in a relationship with Daniel said, I was never surprised. Of course, I was shocked that someone, you know, could do such a thing, but it didn't surprise me.
In the end, that same person said Daniel had also killed a neighbor's dog, and that he liked to show off. He constantly progressed from one thing to the next. She says, quote. He does not need to be out, and I think we would all
agree with that.
According to the Bureau of Prisons, though, he's not in their custody. We don't know exactly where he is right now.
[00:29:00] he's gotta be somewhere,
but he's not in this specific thing. So
where is he?
Mandy: I don't know. And that is very unsettling, especially because you can't, there's no parole. So like where is he?
Melissa: Well, thank goodness there's no parole, but like, seriously, that is absolutely crazy. This one is so strange and I don't know. It, it doesn't, I don't really get his motive other than I guess. Money, but it didn't even seem like, it's not like he was robbing really rich women. He was robbing people, a lot of them at the end of their life, or Dolores, at least in her case, and to kill a mother and her daughter.
I don't know why that like, makes me
even angrier
because the poor girl is going through the loss of her mom and now this jerk kills her. But it's interesting that we have this, serial killer out there. I wasn't really even aware of him. I had
never even heard his name.
Mandy: I had never heard his name either or never heard this story before, but. I feel like it's always so hard for us as like [00:30:00] regular thinking people to really understand the concept of like why somebody kills multiple times, you know, over and over and has multiple victims. And because obviously the sick answer is that this person just enjoys killing people.
Right? But like, it's so. It just doesn't flow off the tongue to say that. Right. It just
doesn't
sound right to say, to think that there's people out there that are like that, that they just get some kind of weird thrill from hurting other people. And in this guy's case, like yeah, he was obviously going for like the low hanging fruit, you know, going for people who are very vulnerable, old elderly women.
Like really, like, to me, I'm just, it's just so sick and disturbing Anytime an elderly person gets taken advantage of, uh, it just really upsets me and pisses me off, but. Just to think of this poor, you know, this woman just thinking like, yeah, he's gonna give me some yogurt. He's doing me a favor. He's being nice to me.
He's my handyman. He's this. And to think that he, the whole time is like planning when he's gonna be able to, to kill this woman and steal from her. It's just so terrible.[00:31:00]
Melissa: It is.
Mandy: So that was our story for this week. Thank you guys so much for listening.
Uh, now that we are back from Crime Con, we will be full speed ahead making new episodes, and I don't even know what the next one's gonna be. We're recording this so far in advance that even, I don't know what's next, but we will see you guys next week. Same time, same place. New story.
Melissa: Have a great week.
Mandy: Bye.
